10 Hiking Essentials + Survival by Mountain Sports and Naturalist Scott Matula

Get ready for your next outdoor adventure with a family-friendly introduction to wilderness safety, hiking, and camping.

Josh Davis of Mountain Sports and River Legacy Naturalist Scott Matula will cover the 10 Hiking Essentials, Leave No Trace principles, what to do if you become lost, and other practical tips for staying safe outdoors. Families will also learn how to prepare for different types of adventures, including day hikes, overnight camping trips, and backpacking.

Participants will get an up-close look at tents, backpacks, survival gear, and other equipment commonly used for hiking and camping. Most of the program will take place indoors in River Legacy Nature Center’s educational classrooms, with a large tent set up outside in a shaded area for guests to explore.

This program begins at 1:00 PM and is designed for families who want to feel more prepared and confident while exploring nature together.

Celebrating 30 Years of the Nature Center
Our key initiative is to educate the next generation of environmental stewards using the resources of River Legacy Park and River Legacy Nature Center. Starting with children as young as 3 years old, our environmental education programs expose children to the wonders of nature and their place in it. Through education, we preserve the Trinity River and its unique eco-system.
