Spring Break Activities at a Glance
Each day during Spring Break Week, River Legacy hosts a special themed program, focusing on different aspects of wildlife and nature.
🐾 Mammal Monday
Kicking off the week, Mammal Monday introduces children to some of River Legacy’s furry animal ambassadors, including North America’s only marsupial—the opossum! Families will also learn about the history of ferrets in the U.S., including how the black-footed ferret nearly went extinct before conservation efforts helped protect them.
🐢 Turtle Tuesday
Turtles are among the oldest and most resilient species on Earth, and Turtle Tuesday is all about celebrating these incredible reptiles. Visitors will learn the difference between aquatic and terrestrial turtles, how turtles adapt to different environments, and fascinating facts like how some turtles can live for over 100 years!
💦 Watery Wednesday
This water-focused day takes children on an exploration of River Legacy’s pond to discover the smallest aquatic creatures that play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Through guided activities, participants might spot baby dragonflies, mayflies, and diving beetles—all species that help determine the health of the local water systems.
🦎 Radical Reptiles
Snakes and lizards take center stage on Radical Reptiles Thursday! Kids will meet some of River Legacy’s reptilian ambassadors and learn the difference between venomous and non-venomous species. The program also covers how to identify local lizards and snakes in their backyards and on trails.
🕷️ Creepy Crawlies
The week wraps up with Creepy Crawlies Friday, where participants get an up-close look at fascinating invertebrates like walking sticks, hissing cockroaches, and tarantulas. Through interactive stations, kids will discover their “superpowers,” such as camouflage, exoskeletons, and the important role they play in keeping ecosystems balanced.
