Earth Day 2025 at the Nature Center: Puddles, People, and Planet Love
On Saturday, April 5th, River Legacy Nature Center once again hosted its annual Earth Day Festival, welcoming over 420 guests despite the persistent Texas rain. With a solid backup plan in place, we brought the celebration indoors—filling the Atrium, Discovery Room, and Back Porch with engaging activities, educational booths, and community energy that didn’t skip a beat.

What is Earth Day & Why Do We Celebrate It?
Earth Day, celebrated every April, is a global call to action to protect our planet and promote sustainable practices. At River Legacy, Earth Day is more than a celebration—it’s a reflection of our mission: to educate and inspire environmental stewardship and connect people to nature. Our free annual Earth Day Festival serves as a fun, accessible way to bring families, educators, conservationists, and nature-lovers together in this shared vision.
Rainy Day? No Problem!
Thanks to our rain contingency plan, we were able to seamlessly shift activities indoors. Guests entered through both the front and back doors and were greeted with maps, flyers, and plenty of smiles.

🌿 Atrium highlights included:
- Informative booths from Arlington Solid Waste & Recycling, Livable Arlington, Wild Birds Unlimited, and the Tarrant County Master Gardeners, and more
- Kid-friendly crafts like our Butterfly Station and Tree Cookies
- Interactive stations such as the Landfill Activity Table

🧪 In the Discovery Room, guests explored tables hosted by:
- Boy Scouts, Texas Conservation Alliance, Animal Services, Trinity River Authority, Texas Ferret Lovers, and more
- Fun make-and-take activities like t-shirt bracelets and cardboard planters
- Composting education and hands-on learning for all ages

🏕 On the Back Porch, visitors connected with outdoor enthusiasts from Mountain Sports.
🐍 Animal Encounters, led by Naturalist Monique, were a hit with Monty the Tenrec and Merry the Snake drawing crowds at two different sessions.
📖 Story Time, led by Dr. Ellen Ravkind, welcomed little ones and their families for nature-themed tales, while guided hikes led by Charlie, Ann, and Zach gave brave guests a chance to explore the trails during breaks in the rain.
Empowering Future Nonprofit Leaders: UTA Partnership
A special highlight of this year’s Earth Day Festival was our continued partnership with the University of Texas at Arlington’s “Introduction to Nonprofits and Philanthropy” class, led by Dr. Carmin Harris. This is the second year River Legacy has teamed up with this group of students, and their involvement was once again a key contributor to the event’s success.
As part of their coursework, students were tasked with creating and implementing real-world marketing materials to promote the festival—including flyers, social media content, and event photography. Many also volunteered on the day of the event. Their hard work and enthusiasm brought fresh energy and a valuable learning experience to both the students and our guests.

We are so grateful for this growing collaboration with UTA and proud to play a role in educating and inspiring the next generation of nonprofit leaders.
Community Turnout and Takeaways
Even with soggy weather, the positive energy was unmistakable. Vendors, volunteers, and guests alike expressed appreciation for the smooth pivot indoors and the thoughtful setup (a HUGE shoutout to Scott Matula who organized the event and contingency plan and a thank you to Whitney, Dr. Ellen, Elly, and Monique for making it happen!). From education tables to craft activities, there was never a dull moment, and every age group found something engaging.

Overall, Earth Day 2025 was a success, proving that our commitment to environmental education and community-building doesn’t stop for a little rain.
🌎 Thank you to everyone who made this year’s event memorable. Together, we’re building a more informed, inspired, and sustainable future—one Earth Day Festival at a time.
See you in 2026!
