ARLINGTON, TEXAS (June 8th, 2026) For three decades, River Legacy Nature Center has stood as a living gateway to the wild, hidden wonders of the Trinity River ecosystem. Our mission has been unyielding: to preserve this vital watershed, enhance the land along its tributaries, and cultivate an environmentally conscious community.

Today, as we celebrate 30 years of inspiring wonder, we are standing on the precipice of our next great evolutionary leap inside our Discovery Room.

We are thrilled to officially announce the upcoming launch of our newest immersive, state-of-the-art interactive experience: “A River Runs Through It”, with Phase 1 opening to the public on June 9, 2026.

A project of this magnitude requires more than just logistical planning – it requires an aligned vision for the future of Texas education. We are profoundly honored to share that Phase 1 out of 3 of this landmark installation has been fully funded through a generous grant from the Sid Richardson Foundation.

Based in Fort Worth, the Sid Richardson Foundation has spent decades empowering organizations that move the needle for education, healthcare, and human services across Texas. By stepping forward as the sole funding catalyst for “What’s Rushing In? Phase 1”, the Foundation has made a significant investment in the scientific literacy, ecological empathy, and quality of life for families across the entire North Texas region.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Stewards: The Power of Play

Every year, River Legacy Nature Center welcomes an average of 30,000 public program guests and more than 14,000 Pre-K through 12th-grade students for hands-on, experiential field trips. The primary mission of River Legacy Foundation has always been to sustain and protect this vital urban ecosystem. This new exhibit will introduce this theme, setting the stage for all other exhibits and activities guests can explore throughout the Discovery Room and Park.

As guests of all ages open the door into the Discovery Room, they will be greeted with a stunning visual representation of the Trinity River. Young children and adults alike will be captivated as they literally “get their feet wet” and splash in a virtual environment to explore and learn about this natural resource. By using cutting-edge gamification and an immersive environment, we will reinforce the value, importance, and preservation needed to protect this vital part of our local landscape. Local river animals and plants will move, swim, and react in real-time as visitors “splash” through the virtual river floor.

Philanthropy Meets Cutting-Edge Innovation

To match the caliber of the Sid Richardson Foundation’s investment, we knew we had to collaborate with a partner capable of keeping us on the absolute cutting edge of technology. That is why we are incredibly excited to announce that this project is being brought to life by Virtual Wild – the brilliant creative agency that our community already knows as the developer of our interactive Discovery Trail App.

As an award-winning XR and creative agency, Virtual Wild brings a wealth of world-class expertise to our space, having previously engineered acclaimed interactive installations for renowned institutions like the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in downtown Dallas, Texas.

For years, Virtual Wild has helped our guests unlock the secrets of the Trinity River outdoors through our augmented-reality trail experiences. Now, they are bringing that same digital magic inside the walls of our Discovery Room. By blending stunning visual design with highly responsive, hands-on mechanical interactions, Virtual Wild has crafted an exhibition space that feels as fluid, energetic, and unpredictable as the river itself.

A Thoughtful Transformation and The Road Ahead

Just as the Trinity River has evolved over time – shaped by natural forces and human innovation – our phased approach to the project in the Discovery Room reflects that same thoughtful transformation. We are building layer by layer to create an engaging, lasting experience rooted deeply in our core values of education and stewardship. While Phase 1 debuts this June, it lays the groundwork for an incredibly exciting multi-phase rollout mapping out through the rest of the year:

  • Phase 1: Refresh Existing Exhibit (Opening Tuesday, June 9): Establishes the foundational, motion-tracked virtual river floor, projection system, and interactive local flora and fauna software.
  • Phase 2: “Flooding” the River (Fall 2026): Installs two additional projection systems to seamlessly extend the visual river across the entire floor canvas from the front entrance all the way to the back wall.
  • Phase 3: The Forest Experience (End of 2026): Prepare to lose yourself in an entirely new dimension of nature as we demolish the old partition wall to create a breathtaking vertical wall-projection layout. You won’t just look at the forest; you will immerse yourself completely within it. Reach out and experience the rush of the wild as physical flow-simulation props and interactive game modes respond to your touch, blurring the line between technology and the great outdoors. This is a multi-sensory transformation engineered to make you interact with the ecosystem in real-time, delivering an unforgettable, heart-pounding “Wow” factor that connects you deeply to the living breathing heartbeat of Texas conservation.

The choices we make upstream directly impact our communities downstream, and teaching that core lesson is how we ensure our natural resources thrive for the next 30 years and beyond.

On behalf of the River Legacy Foundation Board of Directors, our staff, our 1,000 annual volunteers, and the thousands of children who will walk through these doors, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Sid Richardson Foundation and Virtual Wild. Thank you for your extraordinary generosity, your unmatched innovation, and your enduring investment in the future of our community.

We invite our entire River Legacy family to join us on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, as we open the doors to “What’s Rushing In?” and celebrate this historic milestone together. •
