Every Friday at 4 PM, River Legacy Nature Center comes alive with excitement as we take a few minutes for our live animal feedings—a unique and educational opportunity to connect with some of our animal ambassadors. This weekly event features our rat snake, three-toed box turtle, skink, and Texas spiny lizards, offering an up-close look at how these creatures eat and interact with their environment.
Live feedings are more than just exciting to watch—they are an opportunity for children and families to learn about the natural behaviors of these animals, their diets, and their roles in the ecosystem. Each feeding sparks curiosity and opens the door to meaningful discussions about wildlife, conservation, and the delicate balance of nature. Led by our knowledgeable naturalists, this experience brings children face-to-face with the marvels of the animal kingdom in a way no textbook can.
Although we don’t live feed our copperhead snake, turn your volume up and listen to this adorable conversation this toddler had with her father about the snake eating food. It’s small moments like this that encourages us and everything we do here at the Nature Center.
While you’re here for the live animal feeding, there’s so much more to explore at River Legacy Nature Center. Wander through our beautiful atrium, step into our Discovery Room, which currently houses our interactive Bug Squad exhibit, where kids can learn about insects’ incredible “superpowers” through hands-on activities and displays.
If you’re in the mood for outdoor adventure, our scenic nature trails offer a serene escape into the heart of our 1,300-acre urban oasis. Be sure to download our “Discovery Trail” app for an interactive guide to the wonders along the trails. (Android version coming soon!)
Don’t miss the chance to make Fridays a time of exploration, education, and connection at River Legacy Nature Center. With live animal feedings and so much more, there’s something for every nature lover to enjoy.
*Note: Our Friday Feedings are subject to change whenever we have special events. Please keep an eye on our calendar for updates.
