Remembering Alfredo: A Beloved Animal Ambassador at River Legacy Nature Center Passes Away
At River Legacy Nature Center, our animal ambassadors hold a special place in our hearts. These animals not only educate and inspire visitors about the wonders of nature, but they also create lasting memories for everyone who meets them. Today, we share the bittersweet news of the passing of Alfredo, one of our cherished animal ambassadors.

Alfredo, along with her sister Linguini, joined the Nature Center in June 2022 as baby rats. They quickly became integral to our programs, starting with the Summer Camp Ancient Mammals program and later filling in as substitute ambassadors for 4th-grade programs while our ferret ambassador, Artie, recovered. Despite their short lifespans, Alfredo and Linguini left a lasting impact on our team and the community.
When Linguini passed away a few months ago, Alfredo adjusted to being on her own, thanks to the unwavering love and attention of our Naturalists. Alfredo was a sweet soul who loved treats and even enjoyed grooming her caretakers by gently licking their hands. Yes, our Naturalists let her lick them—her affection knew no bounds!
In mid-November, Alfredo began slowing down, a natural progression for rats nearing the end of their lifespans. Despite this, she continued eating, drinking, and interacting with her caregivers.
Naturalist Supervisor Connor Leferink said,
“I came in that morning and noticed she was still quite responsive but she was very slowed down, so I pulled her out and inspected her and loved on her for a couple hours. She was acting normal when in my hands, so I decided to watch her throughout the day. As I was taking care of something in the other animal compound for closing (Copperhead side), Scott came over and notified me that she had passed.”
On November 20, Alfredo passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of those who cared for her.
We are immensely grateful to our supporters, whose generosity allows us to care for over 100 animal ambassadors like Alfredo. Your contributions enable us to provide these animals with the best care and to share their stories with visitors of all ages. Alfredo’s legacy will live on as we continue our mission of connecting people with the natural world.
Thank you for mourning with us and celebrating Alfredo’s life. She was truly one of a kind.
