River Legacy Foundation Launches Adopt an Animal Ambassador Program to Connect People with Wildlife
River Legacy Foundation is thrilled to introduce its newest initiative, the Adopt an Animal Ambassador program. This unique and engaging program offers the public an opportunity to symbolically adopt one of the Nature Center’s many Animal Ambassadors, strengthening the connection between people and nature while supporting the care of these remarkable creatures.
Meet the Animal Ambassadors
River Legacy Nature Center is home to over 100 Animal Ambassadors, each with their own story and role in environmental education. These animals play an essential part in educating thousands of students and visitors about wildlife, conservation, and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

Through the Adopt an Animal Ambassador program, supporters can symbolically adopt one of these incredible creatures, including:
- Mr. Six, the wise and gentle Box Turtle
- Smokey, the fascinating Western Rat Snake
- Tony & Lucas, the curious and playful Ferrets
- Lizzie & Baldwin, the vibrant Texas Spiny Lizards
- Dragon Fruit, the charming Diamondback Terrapin
- Pancake, the endearing Soft Shell Turtle
These ambassadors serve as living connections to the natural world, helping to spark curiosity, ignite a love for wildlife, and inspire young learners to become future environmental stewards.
Nature Education That Inspires
For years, River Legacy Foundation has been a leader in hands-on, experiential nature education. With thousands of students visiting the Nature Center each year, the Animal Ambassadors play a crucial role in enriching learning experiences. These animals bring lessons to life, making science tangible, interactive, and memorable for children and families.
“Animals have a unique way of engaging even the most reluctant learners,” says Becky Gerro, Fundraising Director at River Legacy Foundation. “A shy student may be hesitant to participate in a lesson, but when they meet a live ferret or gently observe a turtle, a whole new world opens up for them. That moment of connection can be transformative.”
Animal Ambassadors bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world understanding, allowing students to explore ecological principles, adaptation, biodiversity, and conservation in a hands-on setting. These experiences cultivate a deep appreciation for nature, nurturing the next generation of conservationists.
Caring for Animal Ambassadors
Behind the scenes, caring for these animals is a full-time responsibility. From daily feeding and habitat maintenance to routine health check-ups and veterinary care, ensuring the well-being of over 100 Animal Ambassadors requires expertise, time, and resources.
“Our team of Naturalists provides the highest level of care for each animal, ensuring their health and happiness,” says Shannon Porter, Executive Director at River Legacy Foundation. “This means quality food, specialized diets, clean and enriched habitats, and medical care. Every animal has unique needs, and we are committed to meeting them.”
The Nature Center’s animals rely on nutritious meals, temperature-controlled enclosures, and enrichment activities that mimic their natural behaviors. Regular veterinary visits are essential to monitor their well-being, and habitat improvements ensure that they have comfortable, safe, and stimulating environments.
How the Adopt an Animal Ambassador Program Works
The Adopt an Animal Ambassador program is a meaningful way for individuals, families, and classrooms to engage with wildlife conservation and support nature education at River Legacy. While adopters don’t take the animals home, they receive special perks based on their level of adoption.
A Community Effort
The beauty of River Legacy Foundation lies in the people who make it all possible. Visitors, donors, volunteers, and educators come together to create an environment where nature thrives, and learning flourishes.
“Our work wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our community,” says Brittni Greenberg, Marketing Coordinator. “Every visit, every program, every adoption helps bring more people into a closer relationship with nature. The joy and excitement we see in students when they meet our Animal Ambassadors is a direct result of this shared commitment.”
With this new program, River Legacy Foundation invites everyone to be a part of something bigger—a movement that nurtures a lifelong love of nature, supports environmental education, and ensures that these remarkable animals continue to inspire future generations.
