River Legacy Foundation Shares Backyard Meteorology on Fox 4 News
River Legacy Nature Center was thrilled to partner once again with Fox 4 News to bring educational and engaging nature activities into the homes of viewers across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
On December 19th, 2024, Dr. Ellen Ravkind, Public Programs Manager at River Legacy Nature Center, was featured on two in-studio segments on Fox 4’s “Good Day” with anchors Lauren Przybyl and Brandon Todd. The collaboration highlighted our ongoing mission to inspire a love of nature through hands-on learning.
In the first segment, Dr. Ellen shared how to build a creative DIY terrarium project using simple household items. Designed to represent the water cycle, this activity combines fun and education, making it perfect for families looking for enriching projects during the holiday season break. As Dr. Ellen demonstrated how to create a self-sustaining mini-ecosystem, she shared tips for sparking curiosity and helping children connect with the natural world, even from their own backyard.
The second segment explored three different science experiments: a wind tunnel, a “snowstorm” using Alka-Seltzer, and a tornado made with two soda bottles, water, and glitter. These simple yet fascinating activities for kids demonstrated the power of hands-on exploration, offering families an opportunity to discover meteorological phenomena in a fun and memorable way.
Fox 4 News Reporter Paige Visits River Legacy’s Bug Squad
This isn’t the first time River Legacy Foundation has partnered with Fox 4 News to share its mission. Just weeks ago, reporter Paige Ellenberger visited the Nature Center to feature the grand opening of our visiting exhibit, Bug Squad. Her enthusiasm and energy brought attention to the exhibit’s unique blend of education and fun, highlighting its appeal to families across North Texas (she even crawled through the ant colony like a tiny ant!). You can watch Paige Ellenberger’s interview with Shannon here.
Brittni Greenberg, Marketing Coordinator at River Legacy Nature Center said,

We’re incredibly grateful to our supporters for making opportunities like these possible. Whether it’s hosting interactive exhibits, providing environmental education, or sharing the magic of nature with the public through media, your generosity fuels everything we do.
Stay tuned for more exciting ways River Legacy Foundation is connecting our community with the wonders of nature, and don’t forget to try these projects at home with your family!
